Oxytocin is a cyclic nonapeptide (Cys-Tyr-Ile-Gln-Asn-Cys-Pro-Leu-Gly-NH₂) synthesized in the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior pituitary. It exerts biological activity through the oxytocin receptor (OXTR), a Gq-coupled GPCR activating phospholipase C and intracellular Ca²⁺ release. Oxytocin is used in research examining peptide-mediated neuromodulation, social behavior signaling, and smooth muscle receptor pharmacology.
